About this chord
The 9♯11 chord is the dominant ninth enriched with an augmented fourth (tritone), derived from the Lydian Mixolydian mode. This double tension creates a floating, very jazz-sounding color. Scott Henderson and Herbie Hancock use it on dominants to avoid clichés and maintain sophisticated harmonic language.
